TRFK 306 is a tea cultivar from Kenya.
Country of origin: Kenya
Number: 50
Year of Release: 2011
Source: OP of TRFK 91/1
Variety: Assam
Desirable Attributes: Resistant
Notes: The Tea Research Foundation of Kenya (TRFK) has produced an Assamica cultivar rich in Anthocyanin called TRFK 306 wherein the leaves have a purple appearance. Several growers in Kenya are purporting to have created a new type of tea, “Purple Tea.” It is important to note however that this is not a new type of tea, rather the leaves are harvested like any other cultivar and are processed into either green or black tea. Remember, tea types are defined by processing methods, not cultivar. It is also important to note that cultivars rich in Anthocyanin have been used in China, Sri Lanka, and India for years.
